Does Kouta have an unhealthy love life?

  • Seems crazy to me.

      Loading editor
    • Well, he's choosing between 2 girls, that's not necessarily unhealthy. But after all, all love is crazy in its own way.

        Loading editor
    • Their is reason why its unhealthy.

1.His cousin is in love with him and he makes out with her.

2.He lets Lucy kiss him know she killed his family.

3.Kouta has a bitch of a cousin who hits him alot.

3.5. Lucy and angry that Kouta didnt hang out with her, but instead hanged out with his cousin.

4.The thing from 3.5 is the same thing except its Koutas cousin this time.

5.Kouta doesnt have any women who truely give him a good, one ruined most of his, and the other doesnt make anything better at all.

    • When they refer to Yuka as his cousin, it doesn't necessarily mean first cousin. It could second, third, fourth, so she's not very related to him. It's not uncommon in Japan for cousins to date. Also, a lot anime girls tend to hit guys they like, those kind of girls are called tsunderes. I kinda agree with you about Lucy, which is why I kinda wanted Yuka to end up with Kouta. I feel Lucy, even with her triple personality and terrible past, which is responsible for her murderous actions, does not deserve Kouta. Being bullied is no excuse for killing. On the other hand, Yuka is kind to Lucy/Nyu, despite being love rivals with her and even after knowing diclonii can easily kill anyone. Basically, I agree with you about Lucy, but not about Yuka. And in other words, I ship Kouta x Yuka :)

        Loading editor
    • I dont know man Yuka just doesnt seem respectful she doesnt seem to be that much nice to Kouta after what he has been through.

        Loading editor
    • @ sleeping Terror, so basically you prefer the manga to anime. In the manga Yuka is much more sympathetic and Lucy/Nyuu a lot less. Virtually everyone who reads the manga before seeing the anime prefers Kouta x Yuka. On the other hand, I don't know many people who prefer the anime that don't ship Kouta x Lucy/Nyuu.

        Loading editor
    • This shipping war is a common theme on this fanpage. I respect both sides, but it is no secret I am Team Lucy/Nyuu all the way. Also, I don't think anyone would argue that bullying excused Lucy's horrible actions. Even SHE didn't feel they were justified. If she did, she wouldn't feel so much remorse over them. Even though she bears the weight of terrible crimes in the past, I prefer Lucy/Nyuu as the repentant anti-hero to Yuka the classic tsundere. Yuka isn't a bad person, but I just didn't like her character very much.

        Loading editor
    • Actually, I never read the manga, which is funny. I don't know, I feel extremely sorry for Lucy/Nyu, but I typically don't like women who will do anything for a guy or to get a guy. I guess I just prefer Yuka's and Kouta's type of romance more than Lucy's. Not saying I don't like Lucy/Nyu. I think she's a great main character. It's sort of like the Lady and the Tiger story: the princess (aka Lucy) will either allow her lover (Kouta) to choose the wrong door and be eaten by Tiger, or choose the right door and marry the lady (Yuka) behind the door. Either way, Lucy loses Kouta, but it's up to her whether he dies or he chooses to love someone else. I hope people get my reference.

    • I am familiar with the short story in question. I think if those were the only 2 options Lucy would choose Yuka for Kouta. After apologizing to him in episode 13 she walks away and he is the one that stops her and asks her to stay. She still ends up leaving to fight Kakuzawa's main force. As a child, she was completely consumed with jealousy and felt if she couldn't have Kouta no one could, but she came to regret that decision.

        Loading editor
    • The short answer is that yes.

I couldn't care less about the incest aspect, but Yuka has hit Kouta (And on the Manga, Kouta hits her back at least twice), and she does so over the fact Kouta can't remember their childhood memories together, even after knowing Kouta lost those memories due to the trauma of his family's death. Meanwhile, Kaede/Lucy has completely and utterly ruined his life. Not only did she murdered his family, causing his amnesia and in turn, triggering Yuka's abusive responses, but she also caused him a case of stunted growth, and if you look closely, you'll notice he no longer has the sharp intellect he had as a child. Yet, for all his harsh words, he still cared for her enough to allow her to stay with them, and was even willing to risk his life for hers, not to mention in the end, Kouta fulfilled that dreadful promise only to spare her more pain, and not out of vengeance.

In the end, the most healthy romantic option he has in the one who he showed the least attention or romantic interest: Nozomi. And even then Nozomi has issues of her own.

    • Goodness, Kouta is one of the most damaged nice characters I have ever encounterd in fiction history.

        Loading editor
    • @ SDS Gohan,I don't know about Kouta lacking the sharp intellect he had as a child, it seems to me he is calmer and less energetic, but not necessarily dumber. I don't think he was ever academically amazing, but instead has a different kind of intelligence. For example, he was shown to be a fairly talented artist as a kid.

Although a very kindhearted and likeable character, Kouta does have his share of psychological issues along with most of the rest of the cast. Every character in this series needs years and years of therapy.

        Loading editor
    • Even if we take that angle... We still see he can no longer perform those artistic feats. The trauma Kaede gave him utterly messed him up. He can just barely live a functional life.

        Loading editor
    • My own theory is he may have suffered a stroke that night on the train. While he would have had time to recover his basic functions, some things he could do before might have been lost to him.

        Loading editor
    • We never see him attempt any paintings as an adult. It doesn't neccesarily mean he can't. However,  I did notice from watching the anime that when he was a kid he had excellent motor skills and could beat Yuka at the carnival games. As an adult he can't cut vegetables without cutting himself. Maybe a stroke isn't out the question afterall. It is at least a worthy fan theory.

        Loading editor
    • I didnt know Kouta is highly capable of being a cutter,he deserves alot of credit for having the greatest emotional strength in the series,by not even completely losing his mind.

    • I'm not at all trying to be rude, but just out of curiosity what is your first language Spyrocks? The way you form sentences makes me think you're not a native English speaker.

        Loading editor
    • Sorry I easly make mastakes on typing things, because I rush it too fast

        Loading editor
    • Eherm... Literature Nerd. My first language is Spanish. You don't see me butchering English, do you? Last time I checked most people with incorrect grammar on the Internet are actually Native English speakers themselves. The thing is... Few people care about proper grammar on these days and medium.

        Loading editor
    • Im sorry my Dad hates it when I make mastakes on grammer.

        Loading editor
    • I shouldn't have said anything. I wasn't trying to insinuate that non-english speakers butcher English or trying to shame Spyrocks for any mistakes. I honestly thought that he didn't know english well and was using Google Translate, which does a HORRIBLE job of translation. I made the comment entirely out of curiosity and apologize for offending anyone by it.

        Loading editor
    • Its okay Im not that offended.

        Loading editor
    • Neither am I actually. I was just pointing it out.

        Loading editor
    • Im cool with that, you guys are not bad people, your just trying to correct me by my mastakes.

      I honestly appreciate that.

    • If one wishes to study properly spoken English, one need go no further than the quintessential American icon, Archibald Bunker, as portrayed by noted actor Carroll O'Connor.

Actually, don't do that at all. Archie, among his other failings, staged regular frontal assaults on the Queen's English---and everyone else's English as well, like when he stated 'You have to keep things in the proper suspective'.

And Gohan is correct - a lot of native speakers could do with a refresher course.

        Loading editor
    • I know that, but I dont know what you mean by native speaker.

What the heck is a native speaker, do you guys think Im from India or something like that?

        Loading editor
    • My apologies. By native speaker, I just meant someone born speaking it, who as Gohan pointed out, has the least excuse for mangling the language - which you did NOT do by any stretch. American English has of late been hit with a battering ram by those who supposedly know it best of all. In fact, the word 'normalcy' was coined for a 1920 Presidential candidate, and is only a real word now because of a century of usage.

Spyrocks, you're fine. Now let's get back to Kouta's talk-show-ready love life, please.

    • Very well, lets get back to topic.

    • Interesting song. I've never heard it before, even though I thought my knowledge of 60s music was pretty good. Of course I'm only 25, so there are many older people with far more knowledge of that era of music.

    • The love triangle in Elfen Lied reminded me of the novel Phantom of the Opera. Did anyone else make that connection?

        Loading editor
    • Never got a chance to know the story of Phantom of the Opera. Ever

        Loading editor
    • Well its an 1800s French Gothic novel about a Parisian anti-hero known as "The Phantom" who worked as an assassin, but now is hiding in an opera house. He was abandoned by his own parents because of his deformed face and never shown kindness by anyone. This caused him to become cruel and distant from humanity until he meets a young opera singer named Christine Dae from Sweden. The Phantom reveals his presence only as a voice at first and trains her to sing better. He claims to be the angel of music and has a passionate love of music along with being a genius engineer and ruthless killer. The Phantom falls in love with Christine because he is moved by her kindness and accepting attitute towards him. However, he finds out that she already has a fiance' named Raul who comes from the upper class and has never had any of the struggle and tragedy that the Phantom has faced. The Phantom goes into a fit of explosive rage and kills many people as revenge. He is going to kill Raul and force Christine to choose him or perish. She kisses him and tells him that it was his cruelty and not his face that cost him any chance of being with her. The Phantom realizes his error and lets her go. His last wish is simply for Christine to bury him, which she does after he dies of a broken heart. Can you guess which characters I think represent which?

        Loading editor
    • Thank you, I think I know of whom they represent.

    • Ending up with Yuka in the Manga is almost kinda merciful for him. At least stopped being abusive by that point.

Watching your only friend being murdered in front of your eyes by people who've bullied you, then realizing they killed something just to torment you seems like a pretty good reason to kill. And plus, she is a Diclo something, the trauma she endured probably set off a trigger she couldn't control.

Being a Diclonius may make her more prone to kill, but she's by no means an innocent angel.

Let's be frank here. Psychosis or not, and as sympathetic as she may be... She's kind of a bitch. She's selfish, sadstic, and an absolute Kurama-level hypocrite. And I'm not talking about The Voice, who makes the likes of Stalin himself blush. I'm talking about Kaede herself.

Se's not above redemption, but she is seriously messed up, and the only way I can see her with Kouta without any sort of "divine" intervention is letting Nyuu take the reins.

Then again, I'm all for a communal relationship between the three plus Nozomi, so... Yeah, kinda biased there.
