First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out.

Brother Maynard, from Monty Python And The Holy Grail, offering practical advice for any hand grenade, Holy or mundane

The M26 hand grenade emerged in the years right after World War II.

In real life

The M26 was the first model of hand grenade that still used a cast iron body but enclosed either notched wire or shot to serve as the lethal fragments. This mechanism is in contrast to other grenades that would use the grenade body itself as the shrapnel. This new type of grenade was more reliable than the old Mark II Pineapple grenades.

In the series

In the manga, Satou carries hand grenades on his belt, but they are difficult to identify accurately as the M26. Later, during his final fight with Lucy, Bando uses a flash bomb that blinds her, followed by a tear gas grenade, which ends up working at cross purposes to one another. Whether either of these were variants on the M26 cannot be determined from the story.

In the anime's version of events, Satou carries an M26 hand grenade in Episode 2. Bando notes Lucy walking by Satou's dismembered body and intends to fire on the grenade when she is near enough. To his shock, Lucy had already acquired Satou's weapon and began strafing Bando with it, negating her weakness at a distance beyond two meters.
